So I was messing around with the script OS X runs before a UPS shutdown. The default script is a hard "shutdown -h" script. I would rather it shut the machine down nicely, so I added in a command to try that first. Now I worry - will the Finder trying to shut the machine down kill the process of the shutdown script? That is, if the Finder fails its shutdown for some reason, will there be no hard shutdown fallback? There is no fun way of testing this out.

In other news I got an Airport Express today. This replaces the 802.11b router (well, I turned off the wireless part of it) The configuration failed the first time, but I got it working the second time. I need to do some more research on setting up security on it. Right now I am running WPA which should definitely be enough. I splurged and got the Monster cables with it. I am not one to be a cable snob at all, but the Monster Connection Kit for the Airport Express comes with a nice mini-optical to TOSLINK cable.

Some problems we are running into:
1) We are running out of ethernet ports. We started with a router with four ports. Right now we have four computers, the TiVo, and the Airport Express. I have a five-port switch plugged in that allows us to connect everything for now. The PlayStation2 could still be hooked up, and it would be nice to have a spare ethernet cable in the living room for roommate who does not have wireless. Right now I think we can just do that.

2) We are running out of power outlets. With the home theater and the networking all run off of two power strips, things are definitely restricted. We already had to sacrifice the lamp in the living room.

3) We are running out of inputs on the receiver. We do not have everything hooked up to it now (for lack of inputs), but some things are going straight to the television (which has four inputs), so it works in the end. We have a CD changer, a DVD player, the TiVo, the PlayStation2, the Airport Express, and the television.

4) The cabling behind the system is quickly becoming a mess. Having done cabling for a few hours earlier this week at work, it is really bothering me. I am going to sit down with some cable ties and fix it sometime next week.
